For the first hundred or so pages, nothing actually happens. After things did get going, it was better, but it still never really grabbed me, character and story wise. Then, he totally redeemed the whole thing with those last few pages. I was surprised, and a little bit awestruck at how completely he changed my entire view of the work in just a few hundred words at the end.Call me Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17704646008578216859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1050114170808386390.post-34163787988085422302013-04-15T10:32:19.020-04:002013-04-15T10:32:19.020-04:00Thank you for this lovely review! If people ask their doctors for help with weight loss, they will receive sound evidence-based advice. The problem is, that advice isn't necessarily easy to follow for most of us, so we look for easier answers. We waste money on The South Beach Diet, or The Atkins Diet, or The Master Cleanse Diet instead of following our doctors' advice.Call me Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17704646008578216859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1050114170808386390.post-42214917944840520512012-11-08T11:26:20.305-05:002012-11-08T11:26:20.305-05:00I've have a copy of Mark's previous book o...I've have a copy of Mark's previous book on the Battle of Ortona and will have to add this to my list. My mother lived in San Leonardo, the village next to Ortona that was seized by the Germans. she lived through both battles, so this is very interesting for me. I will definitely get this book too. Mark is the most knowledgeable person on this battle I have ever met. It is the only remaining publication he knows of that does not accept electronic submissions - pretty much a dinosaur watching the pretty burning ball fall from the sky.Call me Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17704646008578216859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1050114170808386390.post-52124709402843808542012-05-26T08:36:47.447-04:002012-05-26T08:36:47.447-04:00I think that's a bogus argument. F&SF already gets more subscriptions than they can read - and a large proportion of them are not worth reading at all. Making it easier for writers to submit would probably worsen their signal to noise ratio significantly. If you want to submit a story to F&SF, you're going to have to jump through some hoops. Perhaps less dedicated writers won't bother.Call me Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17704646008578216859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1050114170808386390.post-78569044055129147592012-05-25T17:33:23.559-04:002012-05-25T17:33:23.559-04:00Perhaps. I've been looking at it, as you said, as any publicity is good publicity. Since I'm an unknown quantity, reviews of any sort give some additional information about the book to potential readers who stumble upon it.

Also, no author, especially an author whose books trigger strong emotions, will get all good reviews. Every time I read a negative review, I'm reminded of my dad's comments about movie reviews in the Boston Globe. He always disagreed with the reviewer's option. But he still found the reviews helpful for that reason - if the reviewer hated the film, he knew he'd enjoy it. I think if reviews list reasons for liking/disliking a book, even the negative ones still can entice some readers who know that if Reviewer A says X, Y and Z made this book horrible, it's probably something they'll like because they have a different take on X, Y or Z.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
